Another milestone in the Alice Springs to Darwin rail project will be reached on Wednesday 13 March when Australia Southern Railroad (ASR) delivers its first locomotive for use on the project construction trains, to the Katherine work site.

Sixteen large railway locomotives to be used in the construction phase of the Adelaide to Darwin rail link will be delivered to Genesee & Wyoming Australia (GWA) in Adelaide on Thursday 18 May.

The abolition of a century old railway signalling system over a short section of the interstate main line railway track in the Melbourne suburbs has improved the efficiency of the interstate rail network and cut journey times for interstate freight and passenger rail services.

4/4/00       Leongatha Rail Review Announced
The Minister for Transport, Mr Peter Batchelor, said the Government was meeting its commitment to the people of Gippsland to review the Kennett Government's closure of the Leongatha passenger rail service in 1993.

The expansion of its independently owned wagon lease fleet by CFCL Australia will bring significant benefits to interstate and regional rail operators.

1/12/99      Australian Southern Railway expands into BHP SA Business
Chief Executive of Australia Southern Railroad (ASR), Mr Charles Chabot said today that the signing of a five-year service agreement with BHP for the management and operation of BHP Whyalla Steelwork's rail network was a fitting conclusion to what had been a successful and profitable year for ASR.

The Save Our Train Action Group (SOTAG) last week joined a delegation from East Gippsland Shire Council in meeting with National Express, the new franchisee of V-Line passenger services.

21/10/99      Freight Victoria to open up jobs in East Gippsland. Yesterday Freight Victoria called internally for 2 drivers interested in transferring to the Eastern region for an anticipated increase in work for that area. This includes crewing arrangements for the resumption of freight services from Traralgon to Bairnsdale. Applications close on the 1st of November and a condition of employment is that applicants must be prepared to transfer almost immediately. It does not state the location to where crews would be based....assumed Morwell, as there is a need for daily pilot work there with now 3 eastern services running daily.
