Adelaide - Pullman Dining Car

Adelaide

South Australian Railways Pullman Dining Car Adelaide was imported to South Australia during May 1928 at a cost of £20,215  9s 1d and was placed into service on the South Australian Railways on 19th May, 1928. Two days later, i.e., on 21st May, 1928, it was first operated on the "Melbourne Express" between Adelaide and Serviceton, providing a dinner service to passengers at a charge of 5s on the down journey and breakfast to Adelaide bound passengers for which 3s was charged.

17.1.1987 Keswick - Adelaide dining car The Adelaide remained on this run until the arrival of No.240 Melbourne Express on 1st August, 1930, from which date it was decided to discontinue the running of the dining car owing to the falling off of passenger traffic.

When the schedules of the express trains between Adelaide and Melbourne and vice versa were altered commencing 13th May, 1935, the dining car service on the SA side was reinstated, dinner begin provided for passengers on the down journey between Adelaide and Murray Bridge, and breakfast on the up Journey. The Adelaide was detached from the down express at Tailem Bend and attached to the up express at that station next morning.

18.1.1987 Keswick Adelaide car dining room On account of the accelerated train services between Perth and Melbourne, adjustments of the train schedules of The Overland were necessary, and from 6th June, 1938, the departure time of the express from Adelaide to Melbourne was altered from 6:35pm to 7:30pm and the arrival time in Adelaide from 9am to 8:25am. In view of these altered timeings it was considered that it would be unremunerative to continue the use of the dining car on either forward or return journey and the dining car service on The Overland was discontinued from that date.

18.1.1987 Keswick Adelaide car fan Over the ensuing 25 years until Adelaide was used on the East-West Express on 23rd July, 1963, it was used only spasmodically on Departmental and Parliamentary special trains to the south-east, Terowie and Port Pirie; also was employed on several A.R.H.S. special guaranteed trains. It was necessary to use the Adelaide on the Adelaide to Port Pirie Junction train because the Cafeteria car was temporarily out of service.

Withdrawn from regular service 6th June 1936. Returned to a regularly scheduled passenger train in 1964 when reintroduced for use on the East-West Express to Port Pirie. Transferred to the S.T.A. of SA during the rail handover who stored it in the North Car Shed of the Adelaide Rail Yard.

On 6.9.1988 it was transferred to the "Port Dock Station Railway Museum".
