Map P2 - Western Australia
Transwa operate the major trains in this region. There are basically only two train lines - Eastwards from Perth to Northam and Kalgoorlie and Southwards from Perth to Bunbury. On the Eastern line, WAGR run the "Prospector" train which operates once or twice per day. This is a railcar which covers the long distances at relatively high speed. Transwa also operate the shorter distance "Avon Link" trains using the same railcars primarily for commuters. To the South is the twice daily "Australind" service. This is also a quite modern and comfortable although less speedy diesel railcar service. Great Southern Railway (GSR) operate the twice weekly "Indian Pacific" train between Perth and Sydney, connecting Western Australia to the rest of the nation by rail. GSR's trains are locomotive hauled and offer a full range of on-board services including sleeping berths and a buffet and dining car. The Indian Pacific is not speedy, but it is comfortable and trips are promoted as 'land-cruises'. The Indian Pacific takes about three days to cross the country. The Hotham Valley Railway operates occasional tourist services on the line east of Pinjarra to Dwellingup, and regular dinner trains through the forest from that point to Etmilyn. The Pemberton Tramway Company run regular "tram" or light rail services in conjunction with their timber haulage lines from Pemberton to Lyall, Warren River and Northcliffe. The Golden Mile Loopline railway operate regular rides in the Kalgoorlie-Coolgardie area over a segment of the narrow-gauge former "loop-line" railway.
