![]() Map S3 - Illawarra, NSW South Coast and Southern Highlands
Train services are operated primarily by Cityrail. The services from Sydney to Wollongong, Port Kembla and Kiama are operated by double-deck electric inter-urban trains. These trains are quite comfortable, and include air-conditioning but they do not offer buffet services. South of Kiama to Nowra, and South of Campbelltown to Picton, Moss Vale and Goulburn, services are operated by modern diesel-railcars. These are also air-conditioned but do not offer buffet services. The electric services are quite frequent - generally one or more per hour, whereas the diesel trains are somewhat less frequent. Most electric trains start and finish their journey at Sydney Central station, whilst diesel-trains run shuttle services connecting with electric trains at their terminus (usually Campbelltown or Dapto). A regular diesel-hauled tourist train operates over the highly scenic Moss Vale to Unanderra railway. The Cockatoo Run operates return trips from Sydney to Robertson and Moss Vale via Wollongong. The New South Wales Rail Transport Museum operates steam or diesel hauled vintage trains from Picton to their museum at Thirlmere on Sundays (not during the summer fire restriction season though). The Goulburn Crookwell Heritage Railway operates rail trikes from Goulburn to Kenmore on occasions.
