Motorail Services - Taking your car on board your train

Some selected trains in Australia provide "MOTORAIL" service which is where your car can travel with you on board the train.

This map shows the trains that provide Motorail service. Note that in most cases, you can only put your car on the train at terminal stations and in a couple of instances at major intermediate stations.

You can take you car on the following trains:
  • The Sunlander (Brisbane <-> Townsville)
  • The Sunlander (Brisbane <-> Cairns)
  • The Spirit of the Outback (Brisbane <-> Longreach)
  • The Indian Pacific (Sydney <-> Adelaide)
  • The Indian Pacific (Sydney <-> Perth)
  • The Indian Pacific (Adelaide <-> Perth)
  • The Ghan (Adelaide <-> Alice Springs)
  • The Ghan (Adelaide <-> Darwin)
  • The Overland (Adelaide <-> Melbourne)
Note also that the following ferries enable you to take your car to and from Tasmania
  • The Spirit of Tasmania (I & II) (Melbourne <-> Devonport)
  • The Spirit of Tasmania (III) (Sydney <-> Devonport)

Be advised that it is NOT possible to take your car with you when travelling between Sydney and Melbourne, nor between Sydney and Brisbane.

Bookings for your car should be made st the time of booking your rail fare. Generally, Motorail is a service for passengers travelling on the train, however it is often possible, (at higher cost) to consign your car unaccompanied.

Bass Strait Ferry services to and from Tasmania to Melbourne and Sydney offer car carrying service (at heavily subsidised rates).
