You don't need mirrors on the train, retracting or otherwise. DOO in
the UK uses huge platform-mounted mirrors and/or CCTV with cameras and
screens positioned at intervals along the platform. The mirrors must
be made of something tough, as they seem to be pretty vandal-proof.

The Manchester-Alttrincham line (now converted to light rail) did, I
believe, use stock with mirrors at one time. In fact, it does again
now as the trams now used are fitted with retracting ones.
