Most impressive indeed.  And most likely the way that the tolling system
works in Toronto (Canada this is, not near Fassifern, NSW :-)

There, the number plates are the sole mechanism.  After processing the
plate, if the owner of the car has an account then that account is
debited, otherwise a notice is sent to the owner.  I don't believe that
not having an account results in a draconian fine as in Melbourne, but
simple a higher level of toll, basically to cover costs of processing
the transaction.  A much nicer way of doing things, to my mind.
