This tram introduced the four-motor, two-bogie drop-centre design that was to be a feature of the highly successful W-class design which followed it. They were originally ordered by the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust, but entered service after the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board took over Melbourne's various operators.

Preserved L-class trams
Operating L-class trams 104 and 106 may be found operating a Zoo shuttle service (City - Elizabeth St to Zoo) on Sundays (approximately hourly). Very occasionally, when there is a shortage of burgundy-painted W-class trams, one of these two L-class tram sees service on the City Circle line.
