It's not an auto, but actually an outer home for Wingello, which enables
a train to be accepted from Medway Jct while a train is setting back
into the up refuge at Wingello or otherwise fiddling around in Wingello
yard.

This signal and its distant are a relic of a bizarre situation where it
was automatic signalling on the up from Tallong to Wingello, although
NSW standard block prevailed on the down. The automatic working was
removed and reverted to standard block, presumably to avoid Tallong
continuously being staffed to work the block section from Medway Jct (or
Marulan if Medway was cut out). By all the sections being standard
block, any of the intermediate locations could be cut out, to the
ultimate extreme of one long section Exeter - Marulan.
