When I was a child in the 60s and early 70s in Melbourne this was how
every station operated. Box Hill where I lived was particularly
efficient.
About 1971 I wagged school with a friend and caught a train from Box
Hill to Flinders Street with only a Box Hill-Surrey Hills ticket (which
enabled us to get through the gates at Box Hill) and we very quickly got
caught.
Oh the shame!
