I would like to thank Ian Bowles for the many hours of work he has
put into developing more realistic brake and physics values for
all Australian MSTS rolling stock.
This model was produced using Train Sim Modeler v1.1.
Peter Vincent's CD "Victorian Railways Rolling Stock 1886 - 1996" was
used as a reference while constructing this model. More info about
this CD can be found at http://www.netspace.net.au/~pjv101/
About the prototype:
--------------------
The basic design of the Z vans dates back to the D vans of 1858.
Nearly 750 of these vans had been constructed by the early 1950's.
The majority were built on six wheel underframes, while the later
vans (627 - 706 & 707 - 746) were built on four wheel underframes in
the 1940's and 1950 - 51. This van is a model of the second last
version (627 - 706) which featured a four wheel underframe and
planked sides.
In the late 1950's, train slack created by the removal of buffers and
the increasing length of trains was creating rough riding problems for
the guard. After various tests, about 300 vans were fitted with a
specially lengthened auto coupler shank during the early 1960's and
coded ZL. Some of these vans remained in service until the withdrawal
of all guards vans in the mid 1980's.
Unfortunately no four wheel Z vans have been preserved, although some
bodies may be found on farms. However, a number of six wheel Z type
vans have been preserved by the various preservation groups.
