Preservation and Tourist Railway in Victoria

This section is a list of preserved railways and tourist lines in Victoria. This section also lists mainline operators that use steam locomotives or historic diesels. This list doesn't include miniature railways. The railways are listed in alphabetical order. If there are any problems please email me.

Preserved railways

Alexandra Timber Tramway and Museum:

    This society operates 2ft gauge timber tramway and industrial steam locomotives around the Alexandra station on the former VR branch line from Tallarook.

Bellarine Peninsula Railway:

    Originally set up to preserve locos from the Fyansford cement line this society has regauged a section of the former Queenscliff branch line to 3ft 6in. The Bellarine Peninsula Railway operates a number of narrow gauge locomotives and rollingstock from all over Australia between Queenscliff and Drysdale, near Geelong. Steam trains run on most Sundays of the year.

Daylesford Spa Country Railway:

    The Daylesford Spa Country Railway is located at Daylesford in central Victoria and specialises in restoring VR railmotors and trolleys. Historic railmotor trips operate every Sunday and "The Silver Streak" champagne train operates on the first Saturday of each month. Most trains run from Daylesford through the Wombat State Forest to Bullarto, a distance of about 9 km.

Mornington Railway Preservation Society:

    MRPS run steam and diesel trains over a section of the Mornington branch line on the Mornington Peninsula, south of Melbourne. Currently trains operate out of Moorooduc.

Puffing Billy:

    The Puffing Billy Railway uses original VR 2'6" gauge NA class locomotives and narrow gauge passenger rollingstock. Puffing Billy is located in the Dandenong ranges, only 40 km east of Melbourne, Victoria. Running every day of the year (except Christmas Day). Spectacular mountain views and cool fern gullies abound along the winding track from Belgrave to Emerald Lake (Lakeside) and Gembrook. Passengers have a range of tour options to choose from, including journeys of one hour to a full day's adventure.

South Gippsland Railway:

    The South Gippsland Railway was established in 1993 to privately manage, maintain and operate a 40km (25 mile) section of the century old former South Eastern Line (also known as the Great Southern Railway), a rural mainline of the Victorian Railways. South Australian and Victorian diesel railcars operate various trips out of Korumburra every Sunday.

Victorian Goldfields Railway:

    The Victorian Goldfields Railway run steam trains between Maldon and Muckleford on the former Victorian Railways Castlemaine to Maldon broad-gauge branchline located in the Mount Alexander Shire, Central Victoria. Trains run Sundays, Wednesdays and public hoildays and on other occasions for special events, meal trains and group bookings. The steam locomotives used on the VGR are K160 and J549.

Walhalla Goldfields Railway:

    The Walhalla Goldfields Railway operate diesel hauled trains over a section of the former 2'6" gauge Walhalla branch line in Gippsland. Currently the train operates from Thomson along the very scenic Stringers Creek Gorge to Walhalla.

Yarra Valley Tourist Railway:

    The Yarra Valley Tourist Railway are currently rebuilding the line from Healesville to Yarra Glen. Every Sunday the YVTR operate ganger's trolley rides a few kilometers from Healesville station to just past the only tunnel on the line.

Association Of Railway Enthusiasts:

    The ARE operate a number of mainline steam and diesel tours and inspections every year. The rollingstock used comes from a variety of sources depending on the tour and destination.

Australian Railway Historical Society:

    The ARHS operate a number of mainline steam and diesel tours every year. Most trips begin at Spencer Street station in Melbourne and the rollingstock normally comes from West Coast Railway and the Seymour Railway Heritage Centre.

Seymour Railway Heritage Centre:

    The SRHC operate a number mainline tours out of Seymour on the North East main line and the ARHS and ARE often hire SRHC trains for use on their tours. The SRHC has restored a number of carriages as well steam locomotive J 515 and several diesels. The SRHC also maintains several items for V/Line classic carriages and the ARHS museum. Carriages like the "Yarra" parlor car and State Car No 4 can be found here.

Steamrail:

    Steamrail Victoria is a non-profit organisation that operate "Vintage Train" day and weekend rail tours to destinations throughout Victoria on the broad gauge network. Tours are run utilising Steamrail's restored steam and diesel locomotives. Depending on the destination, the trains consist of wooden E and W cars or high speed S and K steel cars.

The South Western Railway Society:

    The South Western Railway Society, is a non-profit organization involved in maintaining Railway Operations in The South Western area of Victoria. This group has operated special trains around Victoria and Southern NSW, and are available to assist other parties in railway operations.

707 Operations:

    707 Operations was set up to restore and operate steam locomotive R707. The group has expanded in recent years and now has a number of locomotives and carriages under it's care. Special tours are operated on the mainline and R707 is often chartered by other enthusiast groups.
