I recall there was a lot of small realignments then, (junctions, to avoid
the overswing of the cars when two crossed on curved track), some platforms
were shaved back etc. Most loading gauges have some tolerance built in on
straight track, ( if you add a mirror it shouldn't make a lot of
difference), its the overhang during negotiating the turnouts that can cause
the problems. As for tunnels, well Melbourne doesn't have all that many and
the Underground was built to accommidate wider vehicles.
