To make it easier to schedule crosses. I have been saying for a long time
(and people who work the line agree) that they should double track every
fourth or fifth single line section on the North Coast. effectively, you
would have say three normal length crossing loops, then one VERY long loop,
then three or four more normal loops, then another VERY long loop. It would
make the job of train control so much easier.
