Misalliance
(With apologies to Michael Flanders and Donald Swann)

At Heidelberg the levers are pulled from left to right
And many other boxes do the same
But some pull right to left, Greensborough does for one,
Putting nearby boxes to shame.

Important to the Hurstbridge line, the boxes they stood
Running trains ton the other, the only way they should
Where they stopped, exchanged bells, smiled
and fell in love.

Said the right handed Heidelberg to the left handed Greensborough
"Oh let us get married if our signallers don't mind
We'd be loving and inseparable, inextricably entwined
We'd live happily ever after" said Heidelberg, and sighed.

To Greensborough's signaller it came as a shock,
"Heidelberg," he cried, "is inferior stock,
It's srtange and uncultured, of standing bereft
We pull to the right and it pulls to the left."

Said the left handed Greensborough to the right handed Heidelberg;
"We'll away on a honeymoon and hope that out luck
takes a turn for the better, I'm sure that it will."
We'd better start saving, just think of the bill."

A train which was passing exclaimed to them
"I've said it before and I'll say it again,
Consider your platforms, how embarassed they be,
They'll never receive any passengers from me."

Said the right handed Heidelberg to the left handed Greensborough
"They'll never allow this, head office is mad.
It seems that against us all fate has conspired,
Our points will be spiked and our tracks all dewired."

Together they found them, the very next day
They had pulled up their levels and rotted away
Deprived of that freedom for which we must fight
To pull to the left or to pull to the right.

Cheers
