The only difference the max. achievable speed would make would be on
recovery - very relevant on the Alice line. But it's all theory - and speed
is not the object in rolling hotel operations - even ontime running isn't so
critical that you'd compromise the travel experience you are selling with
rough riding. Hence my questioning the wisdom of extending the Ghan to
Melbourne over that regauged branch line.
