Can't you just put a loco on each and and drag the trailing one? Apart
from overhead failures, servicing work would most likely be carried out on
weekends so you'd really only need to cover a reduced shuttle service to
Ipswich. 

An alternative would be to put MU cables through a few SX sets and put a
1720D on each end.
