Pretty thick.  When I'm driving around the countryside, I can tell whether a
train line is in use by
A) Grass growing through the tracks
B) Rust on the top of rails.. shiny rails = used line.
C) The semi obligatory fence across the train line at the level crossing site
(ie at Brocklesby and on the line up the New England past Armidale, I think)
D) Commonsense as to where the line goes and what it connects.  On that line,
to the north Sydney, to the south Melbourne.. educated guess, maybe a few
trains use it occasionally (excuse my sarcasm).
