Five killed in NSW train collision

Five people are dead after an XPT train hit a car at a level crossing near
Albury in southern New South Wales.

The collision at Gerogery caused the front carriage of the train to derail.

Police media liaison officer Vanessa Allen says the five people in the car
died, but no-one on the train was hurt.

"The front carriage of the XPT has derailed and is currently sitting about
1.5 kilometres past the level crossing in an upright position," she said.

"Forensic services, police, fire services, ambulance are all at the scene."

The Olympic Way has been closed at Gerogery, with motorists advised to take
a detour on the Hume Highway.

It is the second fatal collision in just over a week involving an XPT train
at a level crossing in southern New South Wales.
