Reread what I wrote. There are some places where the four car mark is not
the best place to stop when the train is in Nightsafe mode.

If he did his job properly, he would see that there was an extra carriage
open.

Based on your reasoning, a driver who picked up an 8-car train when he was
expecting a 4-car train at a station where the 4/6/8 car marks are all at
the same place would always stop at the 4-car mark. It rarely happens. If we
can trust drivers to do their job properly with regard to different car
lengths, why can't we trust them to do their job properly WRT Nightsafe and
extra cars?

Platforms 5 & 6 at Town Hall have the advantage that both platforms have
trains travelling in the same direction. Places like Wynyard do not, so it
would involve stopping the trains in a different place for one of the
platforms for it to work.

Will have to have a look next time I am there.
