I think you are thinking of the 1400 and 1450 class. The 1700 and 1720 class locos
are a hood loco but the cab is at one end. They also have Co-Co bogies. Although the
1400 and the 1450 class locos aren't G8's, they look similar to the flat top T's. The
only similarity between a 1700/1720 class loco and a flat top T is the fact they are
both hood units.
Here is a shot of 1736 at Mackay in July last year. This clearly doesn't look like a
1st series T! :-)
