Let's see. I was nominally living in Adelaide but actually
working in Whyalla M-F and building a house in Macedon at
the same time. Every 2 weeks I travelled over to MEL to see
the house progress and fight with the builder. It would have
been early 1984 I would think. I made some plane trips but
eventually I settled into a pattern of hurtling across on
Friday nights in my little red Celica and being back home in
ADL by Saturday night.

I don't remember the exact details but just that I made that
one trip because there was a special $50 return fare
advertised and that I didn't want to go on it again even if
the fare was 50 cents. I remember rough ride and slow (
10-12 hours or some such ) including forever to get from
Murray Bridge to ADL. I remember dirty windows, noisy
passengers. Yuk who needs it.

Better than China Rail however.
