For much of the twentieth century, people travelled around Australian cities by electric tram or trolley-bus. In Western Australia, trams ran in Perth (1899 - 1958), Kalgoorlie (1902 - 1952), Fremantle (1905 - 1952), and briefly in Leonora. Trolley buses ran in Perth from 1933 to 1969.

Find out about travel in a more relaxed era by visiting Western Australia's Heritage Tramway, at Whiteman Park.

Kalgoorlie Tramway Anniversaries

The Kalgoorlie tramways served the towns of Kalgoorlie and Boulder from 1902 until 1952.

2002 marked the 100th anniversary of the opening of this system, and the 50th anniversary of its closure.

Find out more about this tramway, built in the middle of nowhere to serve the young and confident goldfields community.

Fremantle Tramway Closure

The Fremantle tramways, operated by the Fremantle Tramways and Electric Lighting Board, closed in 1952.

This tramway was a source of much local pride in the port community - learn more.

Museum Store

Books on Western Australian tramways, and a range of other items, are available from the Museum Store.

PETS News and Activities

Classic Car Show

Every year, on a Sunday in March, Whiteman Park is filled with many more classic vehicles than usual.

Monthly Carbarn Tours

On the fourth Sunday in every month, the Perth Electric Tramway Society conducts an Open Day at our Carbarn and workshops complex at Whiteman Park.

Visitors will be able to view

  • preserved tramcar bodies from Kalgoorlie, Fremantle and Perth;
  • restoration work in progress on Perth 66 - the last electric tram to run in Western Australia;
  • workshop facilities.

Date: Fourth Sunday in the month.
Time: 11 am to 3.30 pm
Place: Tramway Workshops, Whiteman Park

On these days the service tram will extend to the Carbarn from the usual terminus at Mussel Pool. A 30-minute guided tour will be provided, and visitors can then return on the following tram.

The volunteers of the Perth Electric Tramway Society [PETS] are dedicated to the preservation, restoration and operation of Western Australia's electric trams and trolley-buses.
