On the Wellington system the guard (or whatever he is called these
days) opens and closes the doors *and* collects tickest. Stations are
open and tickets are clipped/sold on the train. The guard is assisted
at peak times by assistants who I suspect are commuters doing part
time work on their way to their main employment.

I know the train lengths/number or passengers are diffesrent but it
does seem strange that all the Sydney guard apparently does is open
and close doors. Maybe at off-peak times he (she?) could act as one of
the security guards I have read about on other threads on this group?
