The boom barriers were installed in July 1997. This was part of Shitylink's
closing of the Upfield line.

Trains were stabled on the Racecourse line as services run to Newmarket with
connecting bus service to Flemington Bridge. At the time, trains also were
stabled at Flemington Racecourse during the day, and to aleviate the opening
and closing of gates regularly, Boom barriers were installed. Signalling
alterations also took place at Flemington Racecourse, including the
re-installation of Semaphore arms on a couple of signals and the recommisioning
of a couple of sets of points.

I have some photo's of "Upfield" trains terminating at Newmarket if you are
interested.
