The Chunnel also still has considerable "novelty" value.

Several recent travellers to Europe that I know have said they were
keen to try it just so that they could say that they'd a long distance
underwater rail journey, not because of any perceived travel time
benefit.   Under those circumstances it makes perfect sense to be
promoting it to Australian travellers.
