Like everything in life a blanket statment like your above will not
apply to everyone. See my post below for my calculations for a good
example of where owning a car (paying full rego/insurance and
maintenace) and using a weekly train ticket was significantly cheaper
than driving to work.
I fail to see too many places in Sydney except for maybe short
journeys where driving could be cheaper. My calculations for the cost
to drive and park in the city or other area's where you need to pay to
park were extreamly generous.
I'll give another sonario communting from Penrith to Sydney,
forgeting inurance/rego etc. You tell me the train fare for that
journey. (Again assume my car, 1.6l Corrolla, which does about 500km
per $28 of fuel on Canberra roads!!)
Distance, say aprox 50km each way. (So fuel costs would be full $28
or so)
Fuel $28
Toll $15 ($1.50 each way)
Parking $40 ($8.00 per day, which is very generous)
Total $86
Is $86 cheaper than a weekly train fare? Didn't think so.
