Using public transport is cheaper ONLY if you get rid of your car.   Many rail
passengers also own at least one vehicle.  Therefore when working out costs,
forget things like rego and insurance, they have to be paid anyway.

I get no travel allowance at all.  Luckily for me my journey to work only takes
30 seconds.  ;-)

I don't mind the system as used in Adelaide.  It works rather well.  Shame their
train service is so poor though.
