Because it would mean they would have to co-operate - something that neither
of them want to do.

Just witness the debacle of Melbourne-Canberra services.

If you ring V/Line reservations, they will not even offer you the
XPT/Cottamundra connection, even if you state that the V/Line service gets
you there too late - they will offer you the day before instead. It is only
when you actually mention it to them that they grudgingly ackowledge that
there is a coach going from Cootamundra to Canberra, connecting off the XPT.

There really is not reason why the V/Line coach needs to run - it is
paralleling a service that already operates, provides no useful service
(apart from Holbrook, Tarcutta and Gundagai, and they are already serviced
from Melbourne by Greyhound) and merely provides competition to another rail
operator.

Yet another example of rail operators thinking that competitors have to be
rail based, rather than co-operating and taking on the real competition,
which is non-rail based.
