I think it was something to do with the governments 'backdown' to keep them
in service for as long as possible to keep the national trust mob happy. As
part of that, all W class trams were to be repained in the old livery, which
has been done.

Are there however, any W class trams that are out of service still in the
"Metropolitan Transit" or "The Met" livery?

Also, was the orange livery of the Z class era ever applied to any W class
tram even if for a short period (not including the prototype 1040)
