If I remember correctly, WAGR (later Westrail) bought 23 Ls no. 251-273.

The Weipa units were later acquired, numbers 274-275.

The original Ls certainly were groundbreakers for Australia - SD40s were
still very much the hot news in the USA when the first arrived. The
relatively benign route conditions in WA probably contributed to their
longevity. As I understand it, there aren't enough Qs to displace all the
Ls.

Saw a Q today on a trip job to Cockburn Cement.
