When the metcard was first turned on in Swanston St, I pushed the Short Trip
button, about 10 seconds later we crossed Bourke St (section point) The machine
then gave up and changed to "Out of Service"  I have been meaning to try this
again.  

I good way to make the machine "Out of Service" so you can travel for free
and not get fined as opposied to traveling for free and worrying about getting
caught (I will stick to my monthly and travel in peace, expect when the demand
I validate my ticket)
