Fremantle FTZ may still live

The Fremantle free transit zone may gain a reprieve, despite plans to
abandon the scheme in January 1997. Transport Minister Eric Charlton
has
proposed new negotiations on the scheme.

Mr Charlton made the proposal in early March when he met delegates
from
Fremantle City Council and local MLC Barbara Scott. The Department of
Transport had told the council that it would not continue to provide
free
travel for residents after June this year - a move which councillors
claimed was a breach of contract.

The service, which started in January, costs the council $120,000 a
year,
but transport chiefs want at least twice that amount to continue.
