Thank you for explaining the Harris and Tait set up, chaps.

It seems that they were not EMUs as such, but "electric trains" (aka
"Sparks"). Something like the 7 car Tube trains (1938 stock) having a UNDM
on the 3-car set, coupled to a 4-car unit.

This may explain why EMU has been a more recent term, applicable to true
multiple unit operations.

BTW, does anyone know of any operation in Australia with three or more units
coupled? (e.g. lash ups involving 2-car "full" units [cabs both ends])
