I did read this somewhere, but I can't remember the source. 

It was an article on Melbourne Pubs, so it can't have been in Rail News
Victoria.

Looking at a rough map of the Yan Yean Pipeline track, it seems to have the
same shape as St. George's Road end to end. 

Note that the Tramway Hotel is situated on St. George's Road. 

It is my guess that the pipeline is under St. George's Road south of Merri
Creek, and in the centre reservation north of the creek.

When it was built, Merri Creek was probably on the edge of civilization,
