Melbourne - Darwin link

Just heard today a private rail freight line will be laid between Melb and
Darwin via Sheparton - Griffith ! Cost- only a couple of Billion hard
ones...WHY?, Wouldn't it be more sensible to link Alice to Darwin, and use
infustructure already in place? Go through Sheparton and Grifith if they
have to, but then why not then go via Broken hill?
However, I suppose there could be various mines allong the way?
