Chris,

What they have done on some signals now is to add rabbits ears(rows of white
lights) above the upper set signal lights to indicate the direction of travel .

These are placed a couple of signals in advance of a turnout so that the driver
knows in advance of the turnout what is happening(very useful for large
freighters-means you can maintain a constant speed to clear the turnout
quicker), some of these signals are at Cabramatta-2 indications(heading to the
city - via Granville or Rgents Park), Merrylands-3 indications(Y-link to
Parramatta, over flyover to Granville/Clyde and wrong line to Granville/Clyde).

Drivers have been petitioning for a while to have these installed between Rhodes
and Concord West(heading towards the city for sometime, with no avail)as you get
1.5 just after Rhodes which means the next signal could be 2 yellow(turning out
onto goods line)or 1(green over red)heading towards Strathfield(not good if on a
freighter as there is no way back to goods line without going via city circle).

Must say they remove a hell of a lot of ambiguity from driving trains and should
be installed everywhere(would make life easier for everybody- Freights and
Electrics)and would no doubt speed the system up to no end.

Hope this helps
