Re: XPT derailment north of Albury

Don't speed and don't get booked, that'll fix the govt's "revenue raising".
Of course to apply the logic of those against speed cameras this should result
in an increase in the road toll and then the govt can be persuaded by this
increased death/injury toll to increase speed limits with a corresponding drop
in the road toll. I'll believe that relationship when I see it.

Anecdotally it appears that the complacency of frequent users of particular
level crossings is a big factor in car/train collisions. Sting these people
with a fine(s) and loss of points and they may learn. Listening to the chief
NSW cop in charge of red light cameras recently there was something like an
80% drop in the number of red light runners at the intersections where the red
light camera equipment is located. Perhaps very substantial walls rising from
the roadway, a la Road Runner will reinforce the lesson.

Education is essential but I fear many people don't care much about the need
for near absolute concentration when driving. They love their pretty car and
the convenience that it offers but drive around in a fairly distracted state,
exhibit little road sense and negligible consideration for others. The car is
so entrenched as the dominant transport mode however that loss of licence is
ineffective, look at the apparent increase in the proportion of unlicensed
drivers involved in collisions. Confiscation of vehicles is probably a far
better deterrent, no car less likely to drive.
