This leads me to ask, what is double catenary/contact in the Sydney

for? I know there is double contact on the ESR and Redfern to
Strathfield, and
double catenary in the Blue Mountains and on the up from Chatswood to
St
Leonards. Where else is it used? Concerning the latter section, why
would it be
used for such a short distance? One more thing, how thick are standard
feeder
 cables?

When I was in Sydney a couple of weeks ago on holidays, I noticed that a
very large
proportion of the overhead had double contact wire. It appears to me
that they are
progressively installing double contact wire on most if not all of the
electrified
area.
