Most trains are non-bookable. On top of that, some intercity services like
Albury, Swan Hill, Sale, etc have optional booking.

Tomorrow afternoon I have opted for a different way home to most railfans
from the V set transfer. Most people as far as I know, to save time, are
alighting at Castlemaine and getting an up Bendigo local to Melbourne. I
will sit at Bendigo for the hour and a bit and get the up Swan Hill, which
has optional booking (and first class - no way you'll get me down there in
econ from Bendigo to Melbourne).
