"specialist" schools may not be private, indeed specialist
language, academically or sports-based selective schools are still under
the government system so parents pay no more than standard schools.

As for private school kids paying for train travel, some private schools
offer means tested scholarships for their children to attend. Others
offer performance based scholarships or ability scholarships that pay
for a good part if not all the fees, such an example is the St Andrews
Organ scholarship. These kids may come from not so priveledges
backgrounds have an opportunity to attend to attend (what is perceived
to be) a better school (truth may be far from it). Not all kids who
attend private schools are from rich parents.
