I think the CLP class had a supplementary power generator added to provide
head end power for passenger rolling stock. However, if I can recall
correctly, it was still found to be inadequate to replace the power vans on
the Indian Pacific & the Ghan. Consequently, these trains still had to run
with power vans and there was no advantage in using the CLP class over other
locomotive types. With their EMD F7 type nose and their different colour
scheme they looked good at the front of Australian Nationals passenger
trains recalling the halcyon days of passenger trains!
