The tenders on 3813 and 3830 were swapped circa October 1967, after
3830 was withdrawn. There is a photograph of 3813 double heading with
a 59 Class on a down goods at (near?) Tallong which shows the
mismatched greens and lining styles.

Before 3830 was overhauled, it was obvious that the tender was not
painted the same way as the locomotive: the tender was painted in the
lighter green with streamliner style lining that 3813 ran in after its
second last major overhaul at Cardiff; the locomotive was painted in
the darker green that it received during its last overhaul; the tender
numbers had a patch of green painted over the '13' and had '30' painted
over the top. 3813's tender (TAB 3813) had its builders' plates one
panel behind most (if not all) the other 38 Class tenders making it
easy to identify. The MAAS had the builders' plates put back onto the
correct panel wen the tender was overhauled.

What tender is at Dorrigo (Glenreagh)? It could be TAB 3830. Someone
who lives much closer could go nd have a look at the number painted at
the bottom rear of the tender side sheets and let us know.

The other 38s have the following tenders:
3801 - - - TAB 3805
3813 - - - To be advised
3820 - - - TAB 3820
3830 - - - TAB 3813.

Tender numbers and boiler numbers in NSW were numbered for the first
locomotive to which they were fitted - except for the Commonwealth
Turret Tenders. Tenders and boilers were exchanged during overhauls to
get the relevant locomotives out of 'shops quickly.

Hope this is of help.
