And as is far too often the case, you have entirely missed the point,
which has zip to do with "subway systems".

The Sydney now has 14 underground stations, spread across 4 separate
"routes", reaching up to 10 kms from the CBD, all of which are
dedicated "rapid transit only" service using multiple unit rolling
stock whose original design parameters were based on those of New York
subway rolling stock.

They fully qualify as "subway/metro" stations and would be readily
recognised as such by anyone a subway/metro rider from a city in North
America, and most likely the rest of the world, who stood on the
platform of any of those underground stations. This is already a
larger number of "subway" stations than a number of cities which claim
to have a "subway".

The construction of the largely underground Parramatta to Chatswood
railway will add a bunch more "subway" stations, again on a dedicated
rapid transit only route.

The nature of the rest of the Sydney system is irrelevant to this
discussion on subway stations.

Cheers,

Bill
