Now that there are no station staff (unless it is a Premium station - and even then
its rare for them to leave the comfort of the office), the gates have been removed
from the stations.

I remember it happening, but when VR became the PTC, and econimic reform (False
economy) came to play, it started to disappear.

Most stations now just have a ticket machine for validation purposes.
