Re: Uncompleted Railways

I can think of a few in Victoria:

* Upper Fern Tree Gully to Emerald electrification - only got as far as
Belgrave, and as far as it will ever get.

* Hawthorn to Kew - originally supposed to be extended through to Doncaster,
but reluctant land owners stopped it at Kew.

* Rosstown Railway (Elsternwick - Hughesdale) - The line was authorised in
1878, but wasn't "opened" until 14/11/1888. The first (and only) train was
hired from Victorian Railways, and the line (complete with four stations)
remained idle until it was dismantled in 1916. It was hoped that this line
would provide a regular link between the newly opened Gippsland railway and
the Brighton line, and also "conviniently" serve William Ross's sugar-beet
factory (which, consequently, was built in 1876 but never used and remained
empty intil demolished in 1907).

* Upper Fern Tree Gully to Gembrook - original plans still exist for the
railway to be extended to the township of Beenak, now a ghost town. Puffing
Billy Railway has no intention of going ahead with these plans.

How's that?
