Re: Gauntlet tracks

It's a way of running two tracks without actually combining them into one
single track (with turnouts, etc.) through a location where two parallel
rights of way can't fit because of space restrictions. The most famous
gauntlet section in NSW was the track to Darling Harbour under Broadway.
It's now just a single line serving the Powerhouse Museum, but long after
the Harbour was closed the gauntlet track was still there.

Someone else mentioned the old Como bridge too.

Anyway, here's a simple diagram:

 -----------\ /-----------
 > \ / >
 -----------\ \-------------------/ /-----------
             \/-------------------\/
             /\-------------------/\
 -----------/ /-------------------\ \-----------
 < / \ <
 -----------/ \-----------

This is a rather pathetic diagram, so I propose that 'what is gauntlet
track' will become the very first item in my just-conceived 'Craigs Railway
FAQ' web page that I will create later today at
"http://lios.apana.org.au/~craigd/ppt_faq"! 8-) I'll create a nice easy to
understand diagram using Xfig...

Regards,

Craig.
