On signal posts, what does the sign `NS' mean?

NS is north suburban;

And also stupid all the steel columns that hold the OHW up going west from
Central tp Penrith have MS and ML on them. I have worked for the RSA for
only 12 years and maybe I have got it wrong somewhere.
