A "competent employee" is used on shunts to and from the yard on
a 6-car train. The competent employee rides in the cab at the
Melbourne end of the train. When the home signal (for moves from
either platform to the single line at the Melbourne end) or the
disc signal (for moves from the yard to the single line at the
Melbourne end) is placed to proceed, the competent employee gives
the
driver three bells to set back to the single line section at the
Melbourne
end. The whole of the train then ends up on the Eltham bridge,
clear of
the down arrival home signals and "Siding" signal. When the move
is then
signalled to either platform or the yard, the driver can then
drive the
train forward.

There are only certain 6-car "prescribed trains" (ie shunts or
docks)
on which a competent employee is required.
On three car sets, the Driver drives forward in both cases,
changing ends by walking through the cars.
