Re: Concession Fares on CityRail

John,

In Australia we like to see people of all socio-economic backgrounds
have the opportunity to attend university. Even excluding HECS fees
(which can usually be defered) university is expensive, e.g. the annual
union fees, textbook costs etc. all add up. Furthermore, attending
university usually significantly limits the potential for a student to
earn much of an income. Travel concessions are just one way of helping
to ease the financial burden on university students, and as such it
helps open the opportunities for people of all socio-economic
backgrounds to attain a tertiary education.

An extra $10-20 in travelling expenses per week is a fair bit for most
students.

Other benefits of travel concessions are that they encourage young
people to use, and become familiar with, the public-tranpsort system
(and therefore possibly more likely to use it in future), and to delay
the purchase of a car for a while.
